Gnostic Gnosis No-No’s and the Known Woes
A solo show by Basqo Bim
Closing Reception Saturday Feb 28th, 6-8:30pm
Combining references from his Colombian-American and Southern roots with upcycled materials, Basqo Bim offers a chance to explore the dimensions of self using variously opulent and grotesque forms as a vehicle. Influenced by personal roots in Catholicism, lowbrow genres, and depictions of body horror, Bim’s work weaves these influences into recognizable cultural forms. These forms, such as religious and folk objects, are intentionally distorted and exaggerated to heighten their emotional and symbolic impact.
.
Gnostic Gnosis No-No's & The Known Woes presents a group of recurring figures used to examine belief, forbidden knowledge, and the consequences of knowing. Drawing from Gnostic thought, Catholic material culture, and heretical traditions, these characters operate as corporeal states rather than narratives. Knowledge is treated as something physical and cumulative, carried, distorted, and exaggerated through the body. Here, this is conveyed through disembodied, oversized stuffed noses. The Nose Knows.
Minor Works of the Pocket Gallery
A solo show by Cars Stewart
Opening Saturday March 14th, 6-10pm
Cars is a New Orleans–based artist and miniature maker working with photography and moving images shot in a carefully constructed small-scale world. Their practice centers on building detailed scenes by hand, often drawn from moments where the natural and built worlds meet, producing images that feel familiar but not entirely trustworthy, like a memory. This body of work uses two scales: within a small gallery sits an even smaller one, inviting viewers to look more closely and notice how shifts in scale can recast a scene, changing what stands out, what fades, and who holds power within it.
Creative Mending Workshop with Lexy Ho-Tai
Monday March 16th or Tuesday March 17th, 7-9:30pm
A soft and slow space to breathe new life into beloved clothing and textile items. Creative or visible mending is the magical practice of highlighting repairs, rather than hiding them. In this workshop, we will reimagine treasured textiles, embrace play and experimentation, and ground in the slow, care-based craft of hand-sewing. The act of mending is personal, practical, and political.
Lexy will guide you through various visible hand-mending techniques to fix rips, stains, or holes using patches. Imperfection and experimentation are encouraged! This is an introductory class; no sewing experience necessary. Bring a cherished fabric item that you would like to creatively repair. All materials will be provided, though you are invited to bring in fabric scraps that you may want to use or share with others.
The intention is to create a cozy space, moving at a human pace. Mending is a life-long skill and a way to deepen our relationship to the material world <3
